Dianthus barbatus—Sweet William Seeds
My neighbor grows an organic meadow and each year it's full of wildflowers to attract pollinators. Luckily, the garden is so prolific I'm able to harvest seeds from it. Grown naturally in Portland, OR, I can't say enough about the sound of bees humming and working away on these plants all summer.
Sweet William plants attract butterflies and hummingbirds as well as bees. These plants are great for beds and borders, and best of all, they're an heirloom flower that's been grown for generations for their beauty. In my family, this plant holds a special place of sentiment. They're one of my father's favorite flowers because they were a favorite of Grandma Virginia's—his mom. They reminded her of her dad, William.
Germination instructions are included with your seeds. These will not bloom their first year from seed. Start half of them this year, plant them out in the garden, let the foliage grow strong so that the roots develop well, and then start the second half next year. That's when the first batch will br growing happily once again and will put forth some blooms. For year after that, you'll get annual blooms because the plants will continually reseed the area from year to year. (about 50 seeds)
